social responsibility and community involvement

social responsibility and community involvement

Our commitment to the communities we serve extends far beyond the job site. Here is a snapshot of the many charitable, educational, and community-based causes and organizations we support as a firm.

ACE Mentor Program – H2M is a local sponsor of ACE, which stands for Architecture, Construction and Engineering. The ACE Mentor Program mentors high school students and inspires them to pursue careers in design and construction. It’s the construction industry’s fastest-growing high school mentoring program, reaching over 8,000 students annually. This school year, H2M has an ACE Mentor class of 18 high school juniors and seniors who visit our office monthly to work with our architects and engineers. Throughout the year, the students break up into teams and work on a design project for presentation to their families and school faculty in May.

Half Hollow Hills Shark Tank – Partnering with the Half Hollow Hills School District, H2M provides mentorship to high school teams engaged in a Shark Tank-style business start-up competition. H2M employees meet with the student teams to provide guidance and support in preparing a business plan for a new product launch.

Internships – In an effort to promote careers in engineering and architecture, H2M utilizes a staff of interns every summer to assist the company and grow our industry. This year we are welcoming interns in architectural design, engineering, and environmental services from colleges including NYIT, SUNY Farmingdale, Notre Dame, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, University of Delaware, Manhattan College, Clarkson University, Syracuse University, and Penn State University.

Scholarships – H2M has awarded annual scholarships to six high school seniors who are going on to study engineering or architecture in college. In 2013, we are directing $3,000 to the ACE Mentor program for scholarships. In addition, we provide $2,000 in scholarships to the Superintendents of School Buildings and Grounds Association for Nassau and Suffolk Counties and a $1,500 scholarship in memory of Edward Fulford through NYIT.

Charitable Giving – H2M has a long history of giving to the community through a combination of employee contributions and corporate matching. With donations totaling over $100,000 per year, the list of organizations we support includes the Farmingdale College Foundation, the American Cancer Society, the American Red Cross, Felician College, Outreach House, and Dowling College.

Employee Contributions – Each year, H2M employees make donations to a number of Long Island organizations. Contributions are collected during employee events through 50/50 raffles and silent auctions. In 2012, our employees raised over $2,000 to support the Wounded Warrior Project, the Chordoma Foundation, and Mercy Center Ministries. H2M employees also provide several hundred pounds of food to Long Island Cares and the Interfaith Nutrition Network (INN) through drop boxes at our offices.

Work Programs – H2M backs up our charitable giving with boots on the ground for groups including Habitat for Humanity of Suffolk and the INN. H2M provides work days to both groups, taking time to rebuild damaged homes or to prepare meals at an INN soup kitchen.

Canstruction – H2M has been a longtime supporter of Canstruction Long Island. Canstruction holds annual design and build competitions to construct fantastic, oversized structures made entirely out of canned food. After the structures are built and the winners are declared, the creations go on view to the general public as gigantic art exhibits. At the close of the competition, all of the Cansculptures are dismantled, and the food used in the structures is donated to local food banks for distribution to community emergency feeding programs. Canstruction is the most unique food charity in the world! In our six years of involvement, H2M has donated approximately 35,000 pounds of food to Long Island Cares. Our track record of winning sculptures has awarded us wins in all categories, including: Most Cans Used, Structural Ingenuity, Best Use of Labels, Best Meal, and Jurors’ Favorite.

Community Involvement – H2M is a strong proponent of community involvement. On both a corporate and employee level, we support involvement with a number of community organizations, including Vision Long Island, the Hauppauge Industrial Association, Action Long Island, the Long Island Library Conference, and the U.S Green Building Council. We also play an active role in our local community. From our involvement in the Huntington Township Chamber of Commerce, to our support of the Townwide Fund of Huntington, to our long-term partnerships with Leadership Huntington and Energeia, H2M is a committed partner to the communities that we live and work in.

Industry Involvement – H2M is an active member of numerous professional organizations related to our industry, including the American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC), American Council of Independent Laboratories (ACIL), American Water Works Association (AWWA), Long Island Contractors Association (LICA), New York Water Environment Association (NYWEA), and New York Rural Water Association (NYRWA).
