H2M COMPLETES NEW FIRE STATION FOR NEW YORK AIR NATIONAL GUARD

H2M completed the New Fire Station for New York Air National Guard, 105th Airlift Wing at Stewart Air National Guard Base. The goal of the project was to provide a fire/crash rescue facility, properly sited to adequately support the Air National Guard unit’s aircraft, the commercial operations of an adjacent International Airport, the base, and portions of the surrounding community. The two-story facility addressed the unit’s need for adequate bunk, living, and training areas. The required siting of the building - directly on the flight line, adjacent to the intersection of two active taxiway/runways – presented the primary challenge. The solution needed to address concerns regarding the building’s height, sound controls, and relative remoteness (restricting personnel access between the building and the base proper) and providing utilities to the site.

One key feature of the building is the cantilevered Alarm Center, providing views directly to the aircraft parking areas. Another vital feature is the enclosed, protected courtyard, which provides the 24-hour shift a much desired outdoor recreation area. In addition to the alarm and apparatus spaces, other areas provided in the facility include a training classroom, administrative offices, turnout gear storage, exercise room, laundry room, shared bunk rooms, lounge, day room, recreation room, and dining/kitchen area. The building is constructed of a steel frame with masonry infill and metal wall and roof cladding, masonry and stucco.

H2M Project Team: Robert M. Scheiner, RA, AIA, Senior Vice President; Joseph M. Mottola, RA, Director of Architecture; Ronald B. Lannner, RA, LEED AP, Project Architect; Eric W. Maisch, RA, LEED AP, Project Manager; Linda Chiz, Staff Architect; Michael W. McKeown, PE, Structural Engineer; Jeff Czajka, PE, LEED AP, Director of MEP Engineering; Joseph Manzella, PE, LEED AP, MEP Engineer; Matthew Mohlin, PE, Civil Engineer.

PERVIOUS CONCRETE DEMONSTRATION HOSTED BY H2M

H2M in cooperation with the Borough of Pompton Lakes and Eastern Concrete, hosted a demonstration regarding the environmental benefits of utilizing pervious concrete on civil engineering projects. Pervious concrete was recently installed at Hershfield Park to replace some existing deteriorated asphalt walkways. The park is located within an environmentally sensitive area (flood plain and floodway of the Wanaque River), which presented complications regarding the NJDEP permitting process. By utilizing pervious concrete, the permitting process was streamlined, due to this product’s ability to provide storage capacity and reduce runoff, promote groundwater recharge and improve water quality. In coordination with NJDEP and the Borough of Pompton Lakes, H2M prepared the construction documents and provided an environmentally sensitive solution that fell within the parameters of DEP’s general permit No additional applications were required.
