Growing with Time

Melville, NY (February 13, 2016) – Dana Nally is a Staff Architect at H2M architects + engineers. Dana facilitates new projects by preparing and coordinating preliminary design, construction drawings, and all other phases of project management. Dana has been building her skills every day at H2M, and has all the tools to succeed in the architecture industry for years to come.

Since High School Dana has always had H2M on her radar. In 11th and 12th grade Dana participated in a drafting program at Gerald R. Claps Career and Technology Center outside of her high school. The school’s mission is to provide students with rigorous Career & Technical courses that prepare them for either college or the world of work. Dana’s professor was very close with H2M’s Senior Vice President and Director of Architecture Joseph Mottola, R.A. and the class would take field trips to H2M to spend a day as part of the architecture program. In college, Dana also met H2Mer’s Renee Marcus and Patrick Stone. Dana and Patrick were both judges at Skills USA, a Long Island drafting competition for students. There Dana realized that all of the signs pointed to pursuing a career at H2M.

Dana’s most memorable projects at H2M include the Setauket Fire District additions and alterations, along with Roslyn Rescue new substation #3. Dana said, “Setauket Fire District was essentially my first “baby” here at H2M, I was involved in the project from start to finish.” She also enjoyed that the Setauket Fire District was a large scale project, and involved sustainability initiatives, such as a green roof design and radiant flooring. The project for Roslyn Rescue Fire Company was one of Dana’s favorites because she took a lead role on construction documents.

“My biggest accomplishment thus far at H2M has to be the completion of the Roslyn Rescue Fire Company construction documents. This project had a short deadline of 4 months from beginning to end and we were able to get the job done. During the construction document phase of this project I played a major role in the coordination and delegation of design. I am continuing to work on this project now that we have started construction.” said Dana.

Dana’s favorite part of working at H2M is the collaboration with people on different projects. She also enjoys the company culture and opportunities H2M has to offer. Company Culture refers to the beliefs and behaviors that determine how a company’s employees and management interact and handle outside business transactions. Dana has played on the H2M softball team for the past two summers. “I like the fact that the teams are picked randomly, it gives us all a chance to get to know our colleagues, who we may or may not get to work with over the course of our careers here at H2M”, said Dana.

Dana is also involved in several internal H2M committees including the Young Professionals and Architecture Department Meeting Prep. Dana’s favorite opportunity at H2M is participating in Canstruction. Canstruction is a local organization that supports food pantries.

Dana stated, “Canstruction takes a lot of preparation and time. The event usually ends with an overnight build out, but it is so much fun, and the biggest reward is finding out how many meals we donated in the end.” Dana also participates in many of the 5k runs, walks, hikes, and volunteers at the soup kitchen a few times a year. “I am grateful for the numerous opportunities H2M offers.” added Dana.

In her spare time, Dana loves to bowl and play indoor beach volleyball. Most people may not know that Dana’s been bowling since age four. Her average is 211 and she has bowled two 300 games in her bowling career. Dana started bowling on the varsity high school team in 7th grade and made it to the New York State Championship four times. She also enjoys being active with family and friends, and cherishes time with them on the weekends. Every year Dana goes for a five mile hike with her friends up Bear Mountain in upstate New York. After the hike they partake in the mountain’s Octoberfest, which is a German festival, and Dana calls it a “great reward” after a long hike.

Dana is truly an expert in all that she does for the architecture department. We are all looking forward to seeing Dana grow with H2M in the years to come.
