North Babylon Public Library

Library Addition

North Babylon, NY

The North Babylon Public Library was looking to expand its capacity to provide programs for local children, teens, and adults. Community gatherings, meetings, presentations, and activities were traditionally held in the main reading area. This area, however, lacked the proper technology, space, furnishings, privacy, and acoustic separation from the rest of the interior space.

We designed a new addition to the building to house a community room capable of hosting 60 occupants and future amenities such as new audiovisual technology and flexible furnishings to accommodate a wide variety of activities. The addition also includes several single-user restrooms, a small lounge outside the community room, new administrative offices, and an elevator to provide accessibility to the existing lower level and mezzanine.

The addition provides direct egress to the east parking area, allowing for independent access to the space after hours. Additionally, the east entrance—traditionally viewed as secondary to the west entrance—features a reimagined façade to better highlight it as a main entry point to the building. Electrical vehicle charging stations also provided in the parking lot as an amenity for patrons and staff.
