The Mayor of the Incorporated Village of Westhampton Beach was determined to mitigate nitrogen contamination attributed to the continued use of conventional onsite wastewater disposal systems in the Village with the desired outcome focused on improving local environmental conditions and promoting smart-growth, where permitted, in accordance with local zoning. As such, the Village issued an RFP in 2015 that H2M responded to and won.
H2M moved forward with conceptual planning analyses and determined a cost-effective solution that required intermunicipal cooperation between the Village and nearby Suffolk County Sewer District No. 24 to leverage use of the existing wastewater treatment infrastructure to accommodate flow from the Village. H2M advanced their efforts by putting together design documents and successfully assisted the Village in qualifying for grants. The cost and time savings attributed to both grant subsidy and connecting to the existing treatment facility made the project viable.
The project is currently on schedule to be advertised for bid later this month to advance into the construction phase, which is anticipated to be completed within two years from the start of construction. H2M will continue their support to the Village and provide full-time construction administration and oversight, allowing H2M to see the project from initial conceptual planning phase consistently through construction, systems start-up, and completion.
The project timeline is projected to be completed over a seven year period from initial project conception. H2M’s successful execution of this project would not have been possible without the dedication and leadership provided by the Mayor and her administration to keep the forward momentum from start to finish.
