Greenfield Fire Department

New Headquarters

Greenfield, MA

The Greenfield Fire Department in Greenfield, MA needed a new headquarters. Before they could find a new site, though, the local library co-opted their original station’s property. H2M designed temporary facilities for the Department during the site search, design, and construction process.

Challenges included environmental contamination and elevation issues on the new site. The final design includes two buildings (the main headquarters with a historic firefighting museum and a storage annex), totaling 20,234 square feet. The aesthetic is historically sensitive, complementing the rest of the City’s recent modernization projects.

Environmental sustainability was important to the client. The design targets an Energy Use Intensity (EUI) score of 35 or lower and meets the Massachusetts Stretch Code. The facility is all-electric, except for an emergency propane generator and a back-up propane boiler for the in-floor heating. The roof over the bays is designed to support the future installation of photovoltaic panels.
