Florida Focus: Three Key Questions Facing Public Safety Facilities

Florida Focus: Three Key Questions Facing Public Safety Facilities

We are excited to introduce our new series “Florida Focus: Three Key Questions,” where professionals from throughout H2M will dive into the key topics shaping Florida’s future. Below, Public Safety Market Director Patrick Stone, R.A., LEED AP, answers questions about three of the state’s most pressing issues facing public safety infrastructure.

Question 1: How does Florida’s population increase factor into designing public safety facilities?

Florida’s continued population growth has a direct and measurable impact on how we plan and design public safety facilities, particularly police and fire stations. At H2M, we account for increased call volumes, expanded service areas, and greater staffing needs by designing facilities that are scalable and adaptable over time. This often means incorporating flexible spaces that can support future personnel growth, additional apparatus, or evolving technologies without requiring disruptive renovations. Population growth also brings greater diversity in community needs, which informs how we design public-facing spaces to improve accessibility, efficiency, and community engagement. Ultimately, our goal is to deliver facilities that meet today’s operational demands while remaining resilient and cost-effective as communities continue to grow.

Question 2: What is one design feature Florida public safety buildings can’t live without?

One design feature Florida public safety buildings cannot function without is a hardened, resilient building envelope. Given the state’s exposure to hurricanes, high winds, and heavy rain, H2M prioritizes structural systems, roofing assemblies, and exterior materials that are designed to exceed minimum code requirements. This includes impact-resistant glazing, reinforced walls, and secure roof-to-wall connections that protect both personnel and critical equipment. A resilient envelope ensures that facilities remain operational during and after major storm events, when emergency services are needed most. By integrating durability into the core design, we help public safety agencies maintain continuity of operations and protect their long-term investment.

Question 3: How do Florida storms change the way we design police and fire stations?

Florida storms fundamentally shape how H2M approaches the design of police and fire stations, starting with site planning and building elevation. We carefully evaluate flood zones, storm surge risks, and drainage patterns to ensure critical spaces remain protected during extreme weather events. Mechanical, electrical, and communications systems are often elevated or hardened to reduce vulnerability and downtime. We also incorporate emergency power generation and redundant systems so facilities can operate independently when utilities are disrupted. These storm-driven design strategies allow police and fire stations to serve as reliable response hubs, even under the most challenging conditions.
