Our History

The year of 2018 marks H2M’s 85th anniversary.  H2M was founded in the midst of the Great Depression by Henry “Gus” Holzmacher, who courageously started a modest civil engineering and land surveying practice out of his Bethpage, NY, Long Island home in 1933.  The nascent Grumman Aviation was his primary client.

Robert “Bob” Holzmacher came to work for his father in 1953, and together they grew their staff to five.  By 1955, business was picking up; and with a little convincing, Bob’s college classmate, Norman Murrell, joined the firm.  A year later, Bob’s former boss at Long Island water Corporation, Samuel McLendon, came on board, bringing along his background in sanitary engineering and water analysis.  Within months, Sam set up a modest water analysis laboratory in the kitchen of H2M’s first “formal” office on West Marie Street in Hicksville, NY.  Thus, H2M’s laboratory division was born.

In December 1960, H2M celebrated the opening of its first official office building on Route 110 in Melville, NY, just months before Gus’s sudden passing in early 1961.  “This was the culmination of a long time dream for my father.  He and my mother were very proud that day,” said Bob.  “His great satisfaction, seeing his engineering firm well established and in a prestigious office building was short lived.  But the firm continued to prosper through the years.  I know that my father, in his wildest dreams, could not ever imagine the firm growing to its present size and importance.”

H2M grew to the 50 employees in the 1970s and to the 100 employees in the 1980s and ‘90s, establishing its architecture group and adding a New Jersey office along the way. In the years to follow, the firm continued to diversify its professional services and market sectors, responding to the expanding markets, the needs of its clients and broadening geographic presence. And it still does today.

Bob ran H2M until retiring in 1991, along with Senior Vice Presidents Norm Murrell and Sam McLendon.  Harold Dombeck then took over the helm as President and CEO.  Starting in 1965, as a sanitary engineer, Harold graduated into an executive position, overseeing H2M’s fiscal health and growth.  After Harold retired in 1995, the Board of Directors elected John Molloy to be H2M’s President and CEO, which he served as for the next 17 years.

Former President and CEO, John Molloy said, “I started at H2M in 1974 driving in from Brooklyn and dropping coins into the toll on the Southern State.  The firm has meant everything to me and my family and is integral to our lives.  I have been honored to lead this outstanding organization for the past 17 years.”

In the last few years, H2M has opened additional offices to better service its clients.  Today, President and CEO Rich Humann, who joined H2M as a college intern in 1987, is leading the firm towards continued success.

ACE Mentoring Program

H2M is a sponsor of the ACE Mentor Program, which stands for Architecture, Construction, and Engineering. The ACE Mentor Program provides a forum for high school students to be mentored and inspired to pursue careers in architecture and engineering design as well as the construction industry. It’s the industry’s fastest-growing high school mentoring program, reaching over 8,000 students annually. Each school year, H2M has an ACE Mentor class of approximately 25 high school students who visit our office bi-weekly to work with our staff. Throughout the school year, the students break up into teams and work on a real design project to present to their families and school faculty in May. The students get real hands-on experience and are empowered to find a passion in the type of work we do.  These students are eligible for scholarships in their senior year and many of our mentees have been awarded thousands of dollars to help pursue their college education.  Overall, the ACE Mentor Program has awarded over $14 Million in scholarships to students since its inception.

In an effort to promote careers in architecture, engineering, and environmental science, H2M utilizes a staff of interns every summer to assist the company and grow our industry. This year we are welcoming interns in architectural design, engineering, and environmental services from colleges including:

  • The City College of New York (CCNY)
  • Columbia University
  • Clarkson University
  • Fordham University
  • Lafayette College, Hofstra University

Community Involvement

H2M has been a longtime supporter of Canstruction Long Island.  Canstruction holds annual design and build competitions to construct fantastic, oversized structures made entirely out of canned food.  After the structures are built and the winners are declared, the creations go on view to the general public as gigantic art exhibits.  At the close of the competition, all of the Canstruction are dismantled, and the food used in the structures is donated to local food banks for distribution to community emergency programs. Canstruction is the most unique food charity in the world!  In our 10 years of involvement, H2M has donated approximately 35,000 pounds of food to Long Island Cares.  Our track record of winning sculptures has awarded us wins in all categories, including: Most Cans Used, Structural Ingenuity, Best Use of Labels, Best Meal, Jurors’ Favorite and People’s Choice Awards.

Community Involvement –  H2M is a strong proponent of community involvement.  On both a corporate and employee level, we support involvement with a number of community organizations, including:
