H2M’s Kevin Paul Featured in New York Real Estate Journal
H2M’s Senior Vice President and Private Sector Real Estate Discipline Director Kevin Paul, AIA, NCARB, LEED AP, CFM, recently published an article on storm resiliency in the latest issue of New York Real Estate Journal.
The article, titled “New York Must Prepare for the Storms of Tomorrow,” stresses the importance of implementing storm resiliency measures in the wake of rising sea levels and increasingly destructive storms. Even properties that are currently located outside of a flood zone are still at risk of significant flood damage in the future as storm surges creep farther and farther inland.
The article also provides guidance for implementing storm resiliency measures, including both dry and wet flood-proofing technologies to protect important spaces and a structural slab tied to perimeter foundation walls to prevent upward buoyancy pressure as water builds beneath the structure. Additionally, Kevin suggests elevating all primary function spaces and important equipment above the design flood elevation, a threshold that incorporates anticipated worsening flood conditions, as opposed to the base flood elevation, which is only calculated based on an area’s prior flood history.
