H2M’s Nicholas Bono Talks Suffolk Sewer Systems with Long Island Business News

Long Island Business News recently spoke to H2M Deputy Discipline Director of Wastewater Engineering Nicholas Bono, P.E., about Suffolk County’s ongoing transition from septic tanks to sewer systems.

Long Island’s growing sewer systems are poised to bring numerous benefits to the region, from reducing the amount of nitrogen runoff in the Long Island Sound to enabling even greater and more robust economic development. H2M has played a sizable role in both designing and implementing these sewer systems, relying on cost-effective technologies that allow specialists like Nicholas to design sewer system solutions that meet the specific needs of each community.

For example, in communities where the groundwater is shallow or the topography prohibits gravity sewers, H2M uses low-pressure sewers as a cost-effective alternative. Nicholas and his team are also exploring alternative wastewater reuse solutions to reduce the demand of water directly from the aquifer, as well as alternative onsite wastewater treatment systems that remove significant quantities of nitrogen before discharging the remaining wastewater into the ground.
