Brooklyn Navy Yard
Electrical and Boiler Repair, Replacement, and Mitigation
Brooklyn, NY
Established in 1801, the Brooklyn Navy Yard was the nation’s premier naval shipbuilding facility for 165 years. Since 1966, the Yard has served as home to 450+ businesses generating over $2.5 billion per year.
In 2012, Superstorm Sandy flooded the Yard with 4 feet of salt water, significantly damaging its electrical and mechanical infrastructure. Our team was contracted to rehabilitate the boilers and substations at 16 of the Yard’s structures and design new facilities and measures to mitigate future storms.
These rehabilitation and mitigation efforts included:
- Replacing transformers, switchgear, and other relevant utility substation equipment.
- Replacing electrical distribution systems such as duct banks, conduits, cables, raceways, and panel boards.
- Replacing boiler equipment, controls, and appurtenances.
- Flood-proofing existing buildings and elevating essential equipment.
- Evaluating structure of concrete floors and designing modifications to support new equipment loads.
- Designing a replacement for the Central Steam Back-Up Plant boiler.
