David Town Meeting House
Interior and Exterior Renovation
Coram, NY
The Davis Meeting House was originally constructed circa 1750 and served as a government meeting place and polling location for the Town of Brookhaven during the majority of the 1800s. The Town of Brookhaven designated the home an official Town landmark in 1986 and officially bought the property in 1999. In 2001, the National Park Service added the Davis Meeting House to the National Register of Historic Places.
The Town of Brookhaven retained H2M to provide a structural assessment of the building after a storm collapsed another historic house half a mile away. H2M performed a site visit and observed the existing condition of the structural components, including time-framed post and beam construction, and later prepared a report outlining recommendations for restoration.
H2M developed shoring and bracing plans shortly thereafter to temporarily support the building until repairs could be made. H2M later restored the building and converted it into a museum for public viewings and meetings of the Davis Town Meeting House Society.
The project team designed structural repairs for the foundation and timber framing members as well as new electrical service for the house, high-velocity forced air mechanical heating systems, gas service sized for the house, and a sanitary system with consideration for future expansion. H2M also restored the building’s interior walls, floors, ceilings, fireplaces, doors, windows, stairs, and exterior wood lap, siding, shutters, gutters, downspouts, and front porch.
The Davis Meeting House officially reopened earlier this year with a community festival which included reenactors from the Revolutionary War-era 3rd New York Regiment and tours of the stunning revitalized interiors.
