New Library Building

Glen Head, NY

Since 2014, the Gold Coast Public Library Board of Trustees had been seeking a new site to accommodate the community’s need for more space for events and parking.

Our team was initially engaged to provide a feasibility study, programming, schematic design, and pre-referendum services. After a successful bond referendum, the Library purchased a 2.62-acre property to serve as the new site and retained H2M for design development, construction documentation, permitting, bidding, and construction management services.

The 11,000-square-foot facility will reside on a newly landscaped site featuring native plantings and specimen trees. The exterior design includes shingle siding and cultured stone wainscotting to reflect the cozy, coastal aesthetics of the local community.

The new building’s features include expanded children’s and community rooms; a new teen area; an outdoor reading garden; quiet study rooms; flexible shelving to house larger print and media collections; energy-efficient HVAC, plumbing, and lighting fixtures; on-site parking; and more. An open floor plan allows for visual supervision of the more than doubled square footage, while maintaining current staffing levels.
