Hampton Library

Interior Renovation

Bridgehampton, NY

H2M worked closely with Hampton Library to develop new designs within the existing footprint for the young adult area, children’s room, literacy room, reference area, and director’s office that would meet the modern needs of library visitors and staff while respecting the historic nature of the original building. Allowing for future adaptation and growth was a key factor in design decisions.

Every inch of usable space was meticulously incorporated into proposed layouts, which creatively identifies dedicated spaces for each of the building’s user groups within the existing footprint. The young adult area, for example, features a glazed wall with a decorative film to separate teen seating from the circulation desk, providing a sense of independence while preserving visual supervision and the sense of interconnection between areas.

Existing exterior windows, trim, a fireplace, and other details were carefully maintained while modern furnishings were designed alongside a primarily neutral color palette with varying pops of color in each space. Durable and easy-to-clean furniture and flooring materials were chosen to meet the needs of high traffic, high use spaces. Additionally, lighting and HVAC distribution was designed in a modular fashion to allow for further flexibility.
