Since 1996, H2M has supported the Hicksville Water District, developing and updating their Geographic Information System (GIS) for their water supply and distribution system management program.
An existing GIS distribution system map was uploaded from Desktop GIS format to the ArcGIS online cloud. ArcGIS Online has extended the reach of the Districts GIS map to all personnel, both in the office and in the field. The ArcGIS online map contains all the desktop layers, including water mains, valves, fire hydrants, plant site, water main breaks, tank locations, boundary lines, inter-connections with other districts and pressure zones.
Over 1,600 valve sketches were scanned and attached directly to water main valve features. Additionally, approximately 300 record maps were scanned and linked to the water main layer. Approximately 15,000 tap cards were scanned and linked by account number to the parcel layer. The attached features allow District personnel to instantly access and view documents in the field.
A public facing map has been created and put on the District’s website that allows instant communication between the District and its residents. The map conveys water main breaks, areas of hydrant flushing and hydrant repairs. This allows residents to see work on going in there area as well as help residents understand why they may be experiencing discolored water.
New Federal EPA regulation regarding lead service lines has become effective. H2M is analyzing tap card records, main replacement records and year of construction to provide a GIS based solution to assist the District in determining service line material. After the initial analysis is complete the District will verify unknown and potential lead lines. Once their inventory is complete, H2M will create a public facing map that will allow residents to look up service line material, which is part of the requirements
