Huntington Manor Fire District

New Training Facility

Huntington Station, NY

The Huntington Manor Fire District’s volunteer firefighters needed a local training tower that would enable them to train while remaining close to home to respond to emergency calls.  The site chosen for the new tower was immediately adjacent to the District’s classroom space and a residential neighborhood.  H2M installed a robust drainage system to accommodate the massive amount of water runoff produced during a drill to prevent flooding on the site or surrounding neighborhood.

The tower took advantage of the site’s slope to simulate basement-through-three-story training evolutions.  A unique feature of the tower is that it’s made of masonry, precast concrete, and galvanized steel, instead of prefabricated modules.  This allows the tower to match the brick buildings on the property and minimizes the amount of steel that would be susceptible to rust and corrosion.  The tower also features a unique smoke generation and distribution system to mimic realistic firefighting conditions.
