Mastic Volunteer Ambulance Company
Ambulance Headquarters Addition + Alteration
Brookhaven, NY
When emergency medical calls tripled in the Town of Brookhaven, NY, the Mastic Volunteer Ambulance Company acquired more response vehicles than could fit inside their existing building. H2M designed renovations for the entire facility and added more apparatus, office, training, and support spaces, totaling 19,200 square feet.
Sustainability was a key design influence, leading to the inclusion of environmentally friendly programmatic features, such as photovoltaic solar panels, a white roof with a high solar reflectance index, a geothermal-powered HVAC system, daylight harvesting, and low VOC-emitting interior finishes. The emergency generator can power the entire building for up to 72 continuous hours. A structural insulated panel system (SIPS) building envelope over a steel frame provides a robust, continuous thermal envelope throughout the roof and walls, aiding the design to qualify for LEED Gold accreditation.
