Library Renovations, Additions, and New Annex Building

The Mastics-Moriches-Shirley Community Library undertook several construction projects to offer expanded library services for the local communities of Mastic, Mastic Beach, Moriches, and Shirley, NY.

Our team was involved from the onset, supporting the Library in the promotion of a successful bond referendum to fund this important work, the scope of which includes a 40,000-square-foot renovation of the existing main Shirley branch, a 2,000-square-foot addition and interior renovation at the Mastic Beach Annex, and a newly-constructed 7,000-square-foot Moriches Annex.

H2M reimagined these facilities with spatial flexibility in mind. Each of the facilities include moveable glass partitions to adjust room sizes, a raised access flooring system to conceal wiring and provide more flexibility for locating furniture and computer areas, and bookshelves and furniture placed on castors to allow for easier reorganization. Other modern features include multiple large community rooms and book sorting systems. At the main branch, a café, fireplace lounge, and a maker space are sure to be sought after amenities. Sustainability was a main driving force of design for all three buildings; both annex buildings have a LEED Certification goal.

In addition to the full architectural, structural, and civil design services performed by our team, we also provided interior design services for each of the three buildings. Furniture was carefully selected for function, aesthetics, and durability, and finishes such as specialty ceiling panels are woven into the design to provide branding, wayfinding, and acoustical mitigation. We designed welcome desks for each of the spaces, specifically tailored to the needs of each building, including integral storage, signage, and technology.
