Niskayuna Fire District No.1
Renovation and Addition
Niskayuna, NY
The existing Niskayuna Fire District No.1 station dated back to pre-World War II. Due to its size, the District was forced to store critical response apparatus at another location which impacted response times. They needed an addition that could serve three distinct functions: the paid fire department, the volunteer fire company, and the elected Board of Fire Commissioners who administer the District.
H2M designed a 9,387 square foot addition that worked with the site’s unusual constraints (10-foot grade change from front to back, 6-foot grade change along the response path, and immediately adjacent to a residential neighborhood). The team provided bond vote services, conducted a Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA), and worked to accommodate the neighborhood preferences. After completion, Fire Chief Magazine featured the station on the cover of one of their issues and the Board of Fire Commissioners recognized the team with a Resolution.
