Northeast Branch of the Nissequogue River
Culvert Replacement
Yaphank, NY
H2M was retained to assess possible improvements to address localized flooding around the northeast branch of the Nissequogue River.
Upon H2M investigating the possible improvements to address localized flooding around the northeast branch of the Nissequogue River, one solution identified was the replacement of two culvert crossings at Branch Drive and Terrace Lane in The Branch. The existing culvert did not possess the required capacity to convey the flow from a 10 year storm event.
H2M was able to avoid costly bypass pumping or stream diversions by taking advantage of the existing multiple pipe culvert system at both locations. Although the overall culvert capacities were inadequate to convey the design storm flow, individual pipes were capable of conveying the low base flow. Existing pipes were left in place to convey the basic flow while the new culvert was installed.
