Additions and Alterations

The Setauket community loved their 90-year-old fire station Headquarters, but local growth and evolving building codes and safety standards meant that the existing facility could no longer serve efficiently and safely. The H2M design team had to contend with extreme topographical conditions, a corner property on an intersection, and a response route that intersected with a highly congested roadway.

H2M worked with the community throughout the design process. Preservation of the existing aesthetic dictated the look and utilized materials. The design maintains the shape of the existing main building from the 1930s and features a 2-story addition on either side of the historic section, an outdoor plaza, and a tiered parking lot behind the building. To mitigate the traffic risk, H2M changed the response path onto a side street, designed a traffic control system for the main intersection, and added drive-through bays to avoid requiring apparatuses to back in.
