SUNY Purchase Courtyards
Specialized Space Design and Rehabilitation
Purchase, NY
SUNY Purchase’s “quads” are shaped by four campus residence halls. We provided landscape, architectural, civil, and electrical engineering services to rehabilitate the courtyards and design four specialized spaces: a performance stage, meditative garden, patio, and small plaza. The courtyards feature decorative permeable paving, stone seating, pergola, bicycle racks, four rain gardens that hide low elevation points, lush gardens, and electric charging stations.
The performance stage has a semicircular concrete retaining wall that doubles as seating and a second, wheelchair-accessible row. The stage has a wooden pergola with hookups for lighting and sound. The meditation garden encircles a red maple tree. Ornamental grasses buffer the seating from the surrounding walkways. The patio has movable seating with charging stations and mixed plantings. The plaza is a semicircular space with more seating and bike racks.
The quad also has a 26-foot-wide fire lane with porous grass pavers for vehicular, ADA-accessible, and foot traffic.
