Town of Smithtown
Comprehensive Master Plan & GEIS
Smithtown, NY
The Town of Smithtown retained H2M to prepare an updated Comprehensive Master Plan (CMP) that responds to the changing needs of its population, and provides for modern, sustainable approaches to enhance the Town’s high quality of life.
The Town of Smithtown had adopted its previous CMP in 1957. However, long-term changes in the Town’s demographics, socioeconomic and development trends, transportation, and other circumstances rendered the old CMP outdated.
H2M worked with the Town of Smithtown to lead a robust public outreach process which utilized community meetings and extensive surveys to obtain input from residents in each of the Town’s six hamlets. H2M also prepared a Generic Environmental Impact Statement, which analyzed potential environmental impacts associated with the CMP. When impacts were identified, strategies were developed to minimize or avoid them.
The results of the survey, including over 2,000 public comments and nearly 1,200 survey responses, were used to develop policies and strategies for promoting walkable and sustainable communities, diversifying housing, downtown revitalization, modernization of existing land use controls, open space expansion, and the protection and enhancement of the cultural and architectural character of the Town of Smithtown.
