UBS Arena at Belmont Park
Water Main Replacement
Elmont, NY
H2M designed a water main replacement to provide water to the UBS Arena while maintaining adequate flow, pressure, and fire protection for existing customers within the area.
The newly opened UBS Arena at Belmont Park in Elmont, NY, was built within the boundaries of the Water Authority of Western Nassau County’s distribution system. The multi-purpose arena serves as a major concert venue as well as the new home of the New York Islanders of the National Hockey League.
During its development, The Water Authority reached out to H2M to evaluate the existing distribution system and determine the necessary upgrades to provide water to the arena while maintaining adequate flow, pressure, and fire protection for the surrounding community.
H2M designed a water main replacement to meet these needs, consisting of approximately 3,400 linear feet of new 16-inch cement lined ductile iron pipe, including connections to existing side streets in the area. Replacing the old, undersized 12-inch cast iron water main would allow for appropriate water service to the new arena, provide adequate flow and pressure for the surrounding areas, and avoid potential water main breaks and outages to the new facilities.
The new water main was installed along a highly trafficked state roadway, Hempstead Turnpike NYS Route 24. Due to traffic concerns, most of the work was completed during night hours.
As typical for a water main replacement, unknown or unidentified underground utilities were a key concern, especially given the strict deadline for installation before the arena opening date of November 17th, 2021. By having full time inspection and a resident engineer on the site, H2M was able to quickly resolve any issues that came up regarding unidentified utilities and water was provided to the arena before its opening. The project was completed according to plan and within budget.
