USPS Network Distribution Center
Compressed Air Plant Upgrades
Springfield, MA
The USPS Network Distribution Center in Springfield, MA, utilizes two air compressor plants to enable the processing of over 250,000 packages daily. Each plant includes two 125-horsepower air-cooled air compressors and two dryers. Following a usage demand analysis, the USPS determined that only two of the four compressors were required to manage their Springfield facility. The USPS requested a replacement of the older compressor plant with the remaining plant being left as a stand-by source. The USPS also requested that each plant be interconnected and powered by two separate power stations to eliminate the loss of plant operation if a power station is shut down.
The USPS selected our team to design the replacement of one of the agency’s air compressor plants. Our design included two brand new 125-horsepower air compressors, air dryers, a receiver tank, oil water separator, piping, motorized dampers, and exhaust fans. Additionally, the power supply was reconfigured to feed each plant from a separate service.
We also provided construction administration services, which involved attendance at on-site meetings, shop drawing review, scheduling of contractors, review of payment requisitions, and oversight of equipment installation.
