Village Hall and Golf Club
Adaptive Reuse and Expansion of the Vanderbilt Mansion Property
Lake Success, NY
H2M designed the adaptive reuse and expansion of an existing Vanderbilt Mansion property into a multi-functional Village Hall and Golf Club for the Incorporated Village of Lake Success in the Town of North Hempstead. The historic mansion is situated beside Lake Success, a natural glacier lake, and serves as the focal point of an 18-hole golf course developed by the Village on the grounds.
The expansion of the property included the addition of Village offices, a hearing room, and recreational amenities including a 5,000-square-foot banquet hall comprising a ballroom with commercial kitchen, restaurant, and bar, as well as a modern fitness center with locker rooms.
The new design blends the architectural flavor of the new additions with that of the original Vanderbilt Mansion house structure, incorporating several inventive reuses of the original building elements. H2M reused the original cherry wood locker doors as architectural paneling on building entry walls and salvaged the building’s original Spanish mission-style wrought iron for implementation in terraces, windows, and balconies.
H2M’s innovative adaptive reuse of the historic 1920s Vanderbilt Mansion and golf course harkens back to the days of the Long Island Gold Coast era. The finished product is a widely-used and aesthetically-pleasing Village Hall and Golf Club which addresses many functions and needs of the Village and its residents.
