West Avenue Water Tank

Pedesphere Water Tank Rehabilitation

New Haven, CT

H2M supported the South Central Connecticut Regional Water Authority in the coating rehabilitation of their West Avenue single pedesphere water tank.

The South Central Connecticut Regional Water Authority’s West Avenue steel 1MG potable water storage tank, originally fabricated in 2000, was in need of a full coating rehabilitation.

The single pedestal tank is situated between a main roadway to the front and residential neighborhood to the rear. Considering rehabilitation of the steel structure would require abrasive blasting and the application of industrial coating, H2M provided the Authority with a specification that detailed full structural containment during the tank’s rehabilitation to ensure no issues with airborne dust or paint over-spray.

H2M conducted a present condition evaluation (PCE) on the tank structure pre-construction, so there were minimal issues during the design phase. The engineer was able to use the PCE to make sure all current items and issue with the tank were addressed during design. The coatings technology specified by H2M for the tank was designed to provide a 15-20 year life expectancy.

As part of our engineering services on this project, H2M worked closely with the Authority and Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (CTDEEP) for approval of engineering specifications.
