West Nyack Hamlet Green and Firefighter Memorial Park

Improved Wetland Design 

The Town of Clarkstown retained H2M to revitalize the West Nyack park and playground, including restoring the stormwater management capabilities of the wetlands area, improving the overall environmental quality of the property, creating immersive environmental education opportunities, and improving and adding to community recreation spaces.

After soliciting geotechnical and ecological subconsultants to determine which portions of existing marsh should be preserved and which should be restored, H2M designed a new wetland featuring naturalistic channels with an improved riparian buffer to help manage stormwater runoff. The project also included a new playground, environmental education trail, gazebo, seating areas, monuments and a fountain. Despite the extensive work that had been done, many of the project costs were offset by a New York State Environmental Facilities Corporation Green Innovation Grant obtained with H2M’s assistance.

The brand-new West Nyack Hamlet Green & Firefighter Memorial Park has been open to the public since May 2023, and, as of September 2023, is the site of a stunning memorial paying tribute to a former Fire Chief of the West Nyack Fire Department, as well as the FDNY first responders and local Westchester and Rockland County residents who were lost on September 11, 2001.
