Yaphank Correctional Facility

Yaphank Correctional Facility

Expansion Design

Yaphank, NY

The existing Yaphank Correctional Facility was overcrowded, creating a poor environment for both staff and inmates, and required extensive renovation and modernization. In order to satisfy the New York State Commission of Corrections (NYSCOC) who had granted the County approximately 550 inmate variances over the years, H2M expanded the correctional facility in Yaphank.

As mandated by the NYSCOC, the original program called for new housing for 1,200 inmates under direct supervision along with the core facilities designed to handle a total inmate population of 1,600. The architectural team worked with the Suffolk County Department of Public Works and the Office of the Suffolk County Sheriff to develop a final design for thew housing units and core facilities to accommodate any future growth in the inmate population.

The new expansion involved approximately 330,000 square feet of new space, including seven housing units for 420 inmates, a central visitation room, a booking room, a medical unit with a 20-bed infirmary, exam rooms, a triage area, dental suites, a full pharmacy, and an accommodation for a nursery. Six of the housing units contain 60 single cells in a two-level configuration. Each housing unit features recreation, dining, classroom, and casual areas, as well as laundry and medical accommodations.
