Central Boiler Plant Replacement and Relocation

Brooklyn, NY

Our team was retained by the New York City Housing Authority to replace the existing boiler plant serving 23 eight-story buildings located on the 34-acre Bay View campus in the Canarsie neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York.

The plant comprises seven dual-fuel 300-horsepower steam boilers fed by a natural gas service and two 20,000-gallon underground fuel oil storage tanks. The existing boilers were located below flood elevation, so new natural gas-fired steam boilers needed to be installed in a new structure located above flood elevation to improve resiliency in the event of a major storm.

Due to the minimal space to build an adjacent heating plant building, we designed a second-story addition to the existing plant to allow the new equipment to be elevated.  The design work included all associated structural, architectural, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, geotechnical, and environmental engineering work. The design of a new centralized fire alarm system for the entire plant building was also provided.
