City of Norwalk
New Fire Station
Norwalk, CT
The City of Norwalk sought to utilize a narrow property between Connecticut Route 1 and I-95 as its new fire headquarters and a federally-funded emergency operations center (EOC). When the State widened both I-95 and Route 1, the architecture team helped negotiate with the State to allow the station to reside in the I-95 right of way. Controlling the air and noise pollution from the extreme traffic conditions were top priorities.
The new four-story station houses the fire department’s headquarters, the fire marshal’s offices, a regional EOC, training facilities for all fire stations within the city, offices of emergency management, and a city-wide IT center. The IT department required the incorporation of specialized security measures that wouldn’t interrupt the fire department’s needs. Since completion of the project, the station has been certified LEED Gold.
