Route 23 Northbound and Southbound

Sanitary Sewer Extension

Pequannock, NJ

We designed the Route 23 Northbound and Southbound sanitary sewer extensions, as part of a larger effort by the Township to achieve the objectives of its Sanitary Sewer Master Plan.

The Route 23 Northbound and Southbound sanitary sewer extension consists of providing sanitary sewer service to 18 single-family residences, 49 apartments, 25 commercial properties, and three restaurants. The project proposes to construct 8,000 linear feet of 8-inch and 10-inch diameter sanitary sewer.

Plans and specifications for the construction of these sewers have been prepared to obtain the required Treatment Works Approval (TWA) from the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP).

The majority of the proposed gravity sewers are tributary to the recently constructed Route 23 Pumping Station, which is located on Village Road to the west of the intersection with Route 23. The remainder of the proposed gravity sewers are tributary to the recently constructed Jackson Avenue Pump Station. Both pump stations were originally designed and constructed with adequate capacity for this sanitary sewer extension. The estimated average daily flow (ADF) associated with this project is 78,000 gallons per day (gpd). This flow will ultimately be discharged through existing force mains and gravity sewers to the existing Pequannock River Basin Regional Sewerage Authority (PRBRSA) 36‑inch diameter trunk sewer at the intersection of Sunset Road and the Boulevard. All manhole covers will be waterproof in the flood hazard area. The proposed gravity sewers were designed to maintain either a horizontal separation of 10 feet or vertical separation of 18 inches from potable water lines, including crossings, wherever it is deemed feasible. There is one location where the sanitary sewer will be installed beneath a stream. That section of sanitary sewer will be installed within a steel casing that will extend 10 feet beyond the embankment.

Construction will require a diversion of groundwater for temporary dewatering of the proposed sewer trenches.
